Overview:
Situated on the eastern edge of Zion Canyon, this proposed regenerative landscape and architectural project aims to welcome visitors into more than 10,000 acres of protected canyon terrain. Now in the design phase, it will function as both an entry point for guests and a resource for promoting responsible interaction with the park’s natural systems.
Ecological Framework
A 30-acre nursery will supply restoration-grade plants for use throughout the property and the surrounding region. The work will increase biodiversity, support soil stabilization, and offer visitors a clearer understanding of the role native species play in healthy ecosystems.
Water and temperature will be managed through passive systems informed by topography, solar exposure, and prevailing winds. Trails and gathering areas will be designed to reduce soil compaction and limit runoff, incorporating durable, site-appropriate materials.
Environmental Literacy
The Discovery Center will support environmental learning by offering educational displays and guided experiences. These features will introduce visitors to the canyon’s history, the region’s plant and animal communities, and current conservation practices. A monitoring program using scientific research and environmental data will help evaluate the progress of restoration initiatives and the effectiveness of visitor programming.
The project seeks to foster a resilient and engaging environment. Upon completion, it will provide a well-designed access point to one of the United States’ most iconic landscapes and encourage a deeper appreciation for its natural features.
The Discovery Center reflects a shared governance model with the National Park Service, Zion Forever Foundation, Southern Paiute communities, local jurisdictions, and academic institutions. These collaborators envision a landscape that welcomes two million annual visitors while embodying the values of preservation, regeneration, and equity.
