Background
Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds partnered with YMCA Three Rivers | Head to Toe in the Region of Waterloo to create an enriching, nature-based playscape that serves as a community hub for children and families. Transforming the outdoor space into a sanctuary for play and learning, the project offers inclusive, nature-based play opportunities tailored to the diverse needs of the children served by the center. This playscape supports the center’s commitment to child development by offering spaces that encourage imaginative play, gross motor skills, and contemplative moments.
Overview
Accessible and inclusive, the design ensures that children of all abilities can fully engage with nature, fostering a sense of belonging, stewardship, and connection.
Key features such a carved tunnel, spiral milled log bench, large sand areas, and wacky posts were thoughtfully integrated to encourage big-body play, quiet reflection, and sensory engagement. The natural materials, including a stump activity table and loose parts for creative play, provide a dynamic environment where children can explore and grow at their own pace.
The design incorporates new plantings indigenous to the local climate, enhancing the natural beauty and providing opportunities for children to interact with nature year-round.
