This project began with a clear goal. Woodview Mental Health & Autism Services sought to transform its outdoor space into a welcoming, inclusive environment that supports social, emotional, and leadership skill-building for youth and teens.
With support from a grant, Woodview reimagined its grounds into a space that extends their programming outdoors in a sensory-rich environment. A place where teens can step outside for one-on-one support, gather in groups, or simply take a moment to reset.
Serving approximately 1,800 young people each year, including individuals with diverse needs, the space needed to feel safe, welcoming, and responsive. Not overly programmed. Not overwhelming. But a place that meets them where they are.

From the beginning, teens were part of the process. Through engagement sessions, they shared what they needed, how they would use the space, and what will help them feel comfortable. Their input shaped a design that incorporated their needs and wants.
The result is a series of connected spaces designed for different types of use.
- Gathering areas support group sessions and social connection, with custom log benches, log carved chairs, and a central circle that encourages conversation. Smaller spaces allow for one-on-one support or quiet moments away from the group.
- A sand and water area offers sensory input that many teens continue to seek out, while a creative and a nook with outdoor musical instruments provides space for expression without pressure. These elements support emotional regulation in ways that feel natural and accessible.
- A boardwalk that crosses the existing swale, providing an accessible path.
The playground design allows staff to move fluidly between one-on-one sessions, small groups, and larger gatherings. It also creates space for families, offering areas where parents can enjoy the space as well. Rooted in Woodview’s approach to supporting teens, this space extends care beyond the building’s walls. It recognizes that the environment plays a key role in mental health, and that being outside can support connection, regulation, and growth in meaningful ways.
This is a place where they can show up as they are, connect with others, and find moments of calm, connection, and confidence.
