Rooted in Community & Growing Through Play
Trinity Episcopal School, an independent PK–8 school in southwest Austin, Texas focused on nurturing the whole child—academically, socially, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Deeply rooted in community values, the school also upholds its commitment to diversity, excellence, and family connection.
Transforming Play and Learning
Trinity Episcopal School approached Bienenstock with a vision to transform one of the most visible spaces on their campus: their Kindergarten space. The goal was to push the boundaries of what this environment can be, to create open-ended play and learning spaces that are both structured and flexible. With over 8,000 square feet of space and their heritage oak trees, the redesign focused on respecting and integrating the natural landscape while elevating the school’s mission of whole-child development. Priorities also included solving existing challenges of stormwater runoff and erosion to reimagine these as opportunities for hands-on learning.
An Extension of the Classroom
The space serves as both a hub of joyful, child-led exploration and a purposeful outdoor classroom. Hundreds of students will use the
interactive space and dynamic landscape where they can build dams, construct waterways, experiment, and collaborate, turning natural processes into powerful learning tools.
By focusing on the transformation of the space, this project elevates the playground into a living, breathing extension of the classroom—one that embodies Trinity’s values and empowers students’ creativity, curiosity, and growth.
