The Fay School recently renovated their traditional playground equipment to a fully inclusive nature playscape. They specifically requested Bienenstock to design the space due to aligning values of inclusivity and whole-child well being. Located adjacent to the Buffalo Bayou the playground is a transitional space from fully developed landscape to natural drainage corridor. Care was taken to improve the drainage system through the playground and ensure the play pits would not hold water. Multi-user disk swings, water pump with large accessible handle, ground level components, accessible pathways, and enlarged sand play area provided universal access so all children can play side by side and experience the sensory rich environment.

“Anyone can quickly see how beautiful our playground is, but is is also an intentional part of our curriculum to grow healthy students, mind, body and spirit. They are playing in the dirt and encountering noninfectious organisms in the soil that build healthy immune systems. They are strengthening friendships that lead to academic work partnerships. They are building muscle, They are soaking in nature to return to class calm, centered and ready to learn. We are so glad to o er this space for our student’ development and enjoyment”
