Pelican Ponds Open Space Park

Thornton, Colorado

Overview:

Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds worked with the teams at Adam’s County and Urban Drainage & Flood Control District to add a natural playground to the Pelican Ponds Open Space naturalized park.

This was the second project that Bienenstock was hand-selected by the-Mile-High Flood District to create a natural play space in the Denver area. Located in north Denver this Adam’s County site is an open space project that brought together a natural landscape that uses existing topography to create ecological restoration and play into one. Working with the Adam’s County staff and listening to the desires of the community we designed climbing features, swings and accessible tactile play that engages all senses and abilities. This project has become a showcase for the county and continues to evolve as the forestry staff continues to expand the natural play features beyond the original scope as materials and funds become available.
