Matilda Street Natural Playground

Matilda Street Natural Playground

Dundas, Ontario

Overview:

Implemented through a collaborative community-centered process, this transformation of a Brownfield to a natural playground in the charming town of Dundas, ON.

Matilda was the Bienenstock design team’s first brownfield redevelopment project. Prior to being a playground, this parcel was previously a gas station. Due to site contamination and restrictions, 100% of the installation had to go above the existing grade and the natural playground was the clay cap on top of the lot.  After being involved in the negotiations to acquire the land, Bienenstock lead a collaborative community design process to generate input and ideas. The clients included the diverse community surrounding the site and the community centre next door which has a senior centre, a childcare facility and a at-risk youth program. After a successful community build, the result is a beautiful natural neighbourhood playground on a corner lot along the main street in the old town of Dundas, ON.
