Overview:

The Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota’s 3.5-acre campus is in the design phase for a transformative outdoor nature play space, created to celebrate the region’s rich natural and cultural heritage. This collaboration between Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds and CMSM aims to create a vibrant, inclusive environment where children and families can engage deeply with nature while reflecting the beauty and character of the local landscape. The next generation, especially those growing up in urban centers, should still have opportunities to see, touch, and experience that richness firsthand—to dig in the soil, plant, and feel the satisfaction of getting dirt under their fingernails.

An essential element of this work involves honoring the natural heritage that shapes this land. The design process includes collaboration and consultation to reflect and protect the cultural and ecological knowledge that has sustained the region for generations. The beautiful hills beside the facility form a natural extension of the site, aligning with the vision to integrate existing trees and expand the living network.

Immersive Trails & Play Experiences

The playground design features a network of trails interwoven with nature-based play zones. Each area is intentionally designed to welcome children of all ages and abilities, offering diverse experiences that encourage exploration, creativity, and connection. From climbing and playing elements to sensory gardens and quiet reflective spaces, the play environments mirror CMSM’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Sensory & Inclusive Play

Hands-on learning stations, tactile materials, and sensory-rich features invite children to engage their curiosity and imagination. Every child will find meaningful ways to connect with nature through interactive and inclusive play. These spaces are designed not only to stimulate the senses but also to nurture empathy, cooperation, and confidence through shared outdoor experiences.

Environmental Stewardship & Regeneration

The landscape design focuses on restoring and preserving native plant species that thrive in southern Minnesota’s climate. By rejuvenating the soil microbiome and strengthening the ecological resilience of the area, the project ensures a healthy and sustainable environment for future generations. Trees, grasses, and wildflowers are carefully chosen to provide shade, seasonal variety, and habitats for local wildlife—all while deepening visitors’ connection to the natural rhythms of the land.

This outdoor play environment will stand as a living reflection of the land, culture, and community it serves. Rooted in inclusivity, sustainability, and respect for natural heritage, the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota’s new outdoor space will offer children and families a place to explore, learn, and grow, and serve as a space where play, nature, and culture come together to tell the story of southern Minnesota.
