There are places built for use, and places built for belonging. This is a place shaped by intention. A place created to connect families, children, and communities with nature. To deepen relationships with the natural world, and to inspire its care for generations to come. It began, as all meaningful projects do, by listening. To the land. To the people. To what the space was quietly asking to become.

The team at Buffalo Audubon had a vision rooted in purpose. A commitment to the enjoyment, and protection of the natural world through education, advocacy, and community conservation. That vision set the tone. With the Bienenstock playground design team, the process unfolded with care and collaboration. Ideas were shaped by the landscape. Decisions were guided by shared values. What emerged is more than a designed space. It is a living landscape.

A place to gather. To explore. To notice. A place where connection grows over time.

Play for All

Supported through grant funding, this project includes accessible elements that support children and families with a range of needs. Paths widen where needed and lead to a central gathering area and fire pit. Milled benches are placed directly along accessible routes, with additional log seating extending into the surrounding grass.

Play here is sensory-rich and supports many forms of engagement, including quiet contemplation, creative expression, physical movement, and dramatic play. The Giraffe Swing creates opportunities for spontaneous social collaboration and shared experiences. Nearby, loose parts invite creativity and open-ended learning. A mud kitchen and sensory tables support hands-on, sensory-rich programming. A log climber introduces opportunities for risk assessment, graduated challenge, and physical play.

Different abilities. Different ways to play. All held within the same space.

A Living Landscape

A meadow will be reseeded and brought back to life. Gathering spaces, quiet nooks, and informal areas will sit within it. Existing assets, including the willow tunnel, were preserved. The space is used by many. Day Camps. Birders. Educators. Families. People arrive for different reasons, but share the same space, each in their own way.

This is what happens when a project is shaped through collaboration. It becomes a place people return to, where memories are created and generations connect through shared experiences outdoors.
