Brightpath Windermere Childcare Centre
We curated spaces that met the needs for each of the different age groups at Brightpath Windermere with small rolling hills and differing tactile surfaces for infants/toddlers, sand areas and creative for preschool and then got into more open-ended play areas for the older children. Milled log benches were installed in the infant area for assistance in mobility and gross motor development, river rock for variation in surfacing to challenge core strength and crawl through, and numerous mirror and acrylic panels for discovery. The toddler section contains a music/gathering area, seating, and creative play opportunities that also focus on fine motor development. Small planting pockets, curriculum cabinets and a custom Whoville house built into the fence line. The after school-aged area includes wacky posts, a hill grade, larger climber piece, amorphous log with ship line/rope, and plenty of acrylic and chalkboard panels for creative & interactive play.
Project Background, Public Input and Goals: Brightpath reached out to transform their new childcare facility; the space was a clean slate when we began and, through working with both the facility director and staff, we designed a space that was functional for both its children and educators. We created distinct areas for infants & toddlers all the way through to after-school program aged children as age dictated which opportunities and challenges are often most beneficial along the development continuum.
