Background
In partnership with the Anishinabeg of Alderville First Nation in Northern Ontario, we are designing a transformative project that will reimagine school property. An existing playground and an unused gravel road will be replaced with a vibrant natural playscape and an immersive outdoor learning environment. This initiative honors the cultural heritage of the Anishinabeg community and fosters a deeper connection between children and nature.
Overview
The design process is actively underway, focusing on utilizing the entire area previously occupied by the gravel road and playground. The project will be rolled out in phases, beginning with a state-of-the-art outdoor learning area and playground tailored for school-aged children. This space will include open areas for sports and a shelter for community gatherings, emphasizing the vital role of community elders in cultural and educational exchange.
Future phases will expand the project to include a dedicated toddler and preschool yard, a gardening area for hands-on natural science exploration, and enhanced nature play spaces with sand play zones to support sensory and developmental needs for children of all ages.
From the outset, community input has been integral to shaping a design that aligns with both functional requirements and cultural pride. This project will transform an under-utilized space into a safe, dynamic, and inclusive environment that celebrates Anishinabeg heritage while fostering learning, development, and connection for children and the broader community.
