This pilot project, developed in collaboration with the school board, was driven by the planning manager’s vision to create customizable outdoor learning environments. Each of the 10 participating schools designed a layout tailored to their unique needs, incorporating elements such as circular seating, chalkboards, and teacher stations. The designs were thoughtfully crafted to align with each school’s selected features, budget, and site-specific requirements, ensuring accessibility and individuality throughout.
A total of 10 schools participated, each creating an outdoor classroom as unique as its community. For instance:
- St. Vladimir Catholic School includes innovative log desks, with smaller log seats attached to larger logs that serve as tables or desks.
- St. Angela Catholic School showcases a circular design centered around a stunning mature tree, fostering a natural and inviting learning environment.
This collaborative process highlights the flexibility and creativity of outdoor learning spaces, tailored to diverse needs while fostering connection and engagement. Beyond supporting education, these outdoor classrooms also serve as community hubs. Edmonton Catholic Schools envisions these spaces being enjoyed by local residents during non-school hours—transforming common areas into places where neighbors can connect and friendships can flourish.
Background
Effective outdoor education goes beyond the traditional concept of outdoor classrooms. It requires more than just open spaces, green fields or outdoor classroom furniture. At Bienenstock we understand that for a truly enriching experience, students need a living canopy overhead and living soils underfoot. The inclusion of a vibrant schoolyard forest brings life and vitality to the learning experience, fostering a deeper connection with nature.
